Daethin seeks several things. Profit certainly, but in his work as a mercenary adventurer, Daethin often sees the profit inherent in honing his skills as more valuable than any material wealth – not that he would ever even consider turning down his due payment. Mainly Daethin seeks to improve himself, to expand his horizons, to learn more about the world and its people. All these impulses are aimed at returning home, someday, as a wiser and stronger Elf than he was when he left – to be of more value to General Varasan and to Elionde as a whole, and to be better able to stand up to his meddling uncle. Daethin misses his homeland and is occasionally given to bouts of depression and homesickness – possibly even nightmares, for he knows that even as he has his adventures and seeks his fortune, back home his comrades are still fighting and dying against a merciless and powerful enemy.
Daethin has spent most of his life in the Elven kingdom of Elionde. His uncle Daranel is a nobleman and councillor of the Elven court, but Daethin long ago forsook the life of a noble after he befriended General Varasan, commander of Elionde’s forces in their war against a dark power to the east. Daethin became a scout and soldier for the Elven forces, and served with distinction under the General until he was severely wounded in a major battle, and his uncle Daranel finally caught up with him. Daranel sees military service as a disgraceful career for an Elven noble, not to mention a dangerous occupation for a “cherished” nephew. So Daethin has been exiled to the human lands to the north of Elionde, where a relative of his supposedly works as an advisor for one of the human kingdoms. Daranel’s idea was that Daethin would spend years under the quiet care of his advisor-cousin, and thus be kept out of trouble and away from the war; but early on, Daethin slipped off onto adventures of his own, and now seeks to improve his skill and strength so that one day he can return to his homeland without fear of being treated like a wayward child.
