The Elves of the Westerlands are a widely scattered people, with only a few large population centers. The largest and longest-standing is Eliondé, the forest-kingdom ruled over by the kings and queens descended from Corellon himself.

The legends and histories of the Elves go back further than the recorded history of any other race – but as Elven history is remembered entirely in song and poetry, its accuracy is (politely) questioned by the historians of other races on several points. The Elves of Eliondé claim to be descended from a civilization which once lay beyond the Red Wind Wastes and was contemporary with the Gnossian Empire. These ancient Elves lived in glittering cities built and maintained by mighty wizards, and the land round about them – part of which is now the desert of the Wastes – was green and lush and fruitful, providing all their needs.

The Elven ancestors fled to the Westerlands ahead of a huge Orcish army which invaded their ancient homeland around 2000 years ago. The Orcs pursued them west across the Cloud Peaks and into the great forest at the western base of the mountains. There the Elves turned at bay, and in a mighty battle they defeated the Orcs and sent them fleeing back to the mountains and the wastes beyond. The Goddess Ehlonna lent her power to Corellon, the captain of the Elven forces, and with her aid he drove his sword through the left eye of Gruumsh, the living god of the Orcs, and this was the stroke which turned the tide of the battle.
