The Westerlands
Exile
The people of Liliath, sister of Corellon, continued their flight into the Underdark long after their pursuers had turned back. They were in a panic, but after an hour or two Liliath recovered her senses. She knew she could not lead her people back to the surface, or they might be overrun by Orcs. She decided she would try to lead her people through the tunnels beneath the mountains, and perhaps find another way out, so that they might eventually rejoin Corellon’s people. Her followers agreed to the plan, and they began their long wandering through the lurking terrors of the Underdark.
They soon learned what all travelers in the Underdark learn – that it is a place of horror far beyond any the Surface World might offer. Liliath’s people were hounded by creatures of darkness and trials they’d never known on the surface. They soon became lost, blundering through a wilderness they had no way of being prepared for. And as their journey went on and on, and Elves were picked off one by one by monsters more horrible than their darkest imaginings, a darkness grew in Liliath’s heart – a pall of mixed horror, and weariness, and bitterness. For as the days and weeks lengthened, her mind twisted her memories of her brother, and she began to blame her people’s plight on him, thinking of him as a leader who had abandoned part of his people to a horrifying fate. She became short-tempered and cynical, and iron-fisted with her followers, until her people began to call her Liliath no longer, which means “Passion”, but a related name – the Elven word for “Wrath”, which is Lolth.
